This week I've been working with lens distortion, shadows/highlights/gausianblur/highpass in photoshop. The technique definitely seems helpful in fixing distortion, chromatic aberration, and fringing. When I started the photo had very little depth or volume. Here is the before image:

It is a little flat in terms of the contouring. So in other words, his face is lit from straight on, and ends up washing out a bit, So we're going to give it some more volume, and we're going to give isome more depth, in order to come up with the final effect. Here's the next step:

Step 2:

After completed the phlearn tutorial last week I have decided to go back to lynda.com. I really like how everything is put together, and the voice of the guy giving the directions. This week I messed around with more of curves, levels, and brightness/contrast, really to mess around and discern the differences between the three. I also learned how to really control the three, like adding and editing points on the curve graph and neutralizing colors/smoothing transitions. Here are three photos to show some of the differences between curves, levels, and brightness/contrast.

This week I decided to try a tutorial from phlearn. After watching this through I decided it would probably be a pretty good idea to become a subscriber. Here's the tutorial I just completed, and it had a lot of steps.

In this tutorial I learned:

  • how to use the curve adjustment tool to change color
  • about using levels to bring out dark areas
  • how to apply image to blend colors in more naturally (this is going to save me boats loads of time)
  • how to use the gradient tool
  • using underlying layer to bring out highlights (this was AWESOME!)

I usually like to work along with the tutorial.  Information tends to stick in my head better if I follow along.  I just went to a basic stock photo site to grab a practice photo. So here is the before image:

After working through the tutorial I decided that I kind of like the technique and see it being useful to help make color pop, without it being way over saturated, here is the final image:

This week I have been really swamped with shoot and couldn't finish the normal tutorial. I decided instead to watch a face swap tutorial. It showed me multiple ways to mask a face onto another and how to blend skin tones and textures. Here's some screen shots of a couple that I've worked on.

This week I was really busy with other classes, I almost had no time to do any tutorials. My group for Tuesday's class has a shoot that is dealing a lot with image compositing, I decided to brush up on some selection methods and used our group shots as test subjects. Here's some screen shots of the progress.

This week I finished part of a tutorial going over blend if and shadows and highlights. It was the beginning of the advanced tutorial and was very useful information. I have to skip through a lot because they're just re-iterating information which is a good sign. Hopefully that will mean the master tutorial won't be as hard as I thought it would be. Here's some screen shots of my progress so far.

Going to school at SCCA has left plenty of challenges for me, but now that i'm approaching the end of my second year I figured it was time to become a pronounced expert in photoshop. Becoming an Adobe certified expert won't be easy. It will take more tutorials and work to be sure I have fully mastered and understood everything. Here's some funny photoshop pictures for you to enjoy:
